Windshield protection film goes on the outside of your windshield and takes the hits from gravel, road debris and the rocks kicked up by trucks on Highway 99 and 41. When a rock lands, it marks the film instead of the glass. When the film is worn, we peel it off and lay down a new sheet.
It pairs well with paint protection film on the hood and front bumper, which take the same rocks.
Windshields on newer cars cost more to replace than most people expect. Many have a camera mounted behind the glass for lane keeping and automatic emergency braking, and that camera has to be recalibrated after a new windshield goes in. In AAA’s December 2023 repair cost study, calibration alone added about $360, roughly a quarter of the replacement bill. Some automakers also require factory glass on those cars.
Replacing a worn sheet of film is a smaller job than any of that.
We install XPEL Windshield Protection Film by hand in our Fresno shop. XPEL covers the film for 1 year or 12,000 miles, whichever comes first, against yellowing, cracking, blistering and delaminating. The warranty transfers if you sell the car.
Chips in the film are not covered, and that is how the product is meant to work. The film is a sacrificial layer. Once it has taken enough hits, it gets replaced and your windshield is still the original.
Film bonds to whatever is on the glass when it goes on. Water spots, road film and wiper residue would end up sealed underneath, which is why the windshield gets checked and cleaned before any film touches it.
We check the windshield for chips and cracks. Film protects against new damage. It does not repair a chip that is already there, so existing chips should be repaired before install.
The outside of the glass is washed and cleared of water spots, road film and wiper residue so nothing gets trapped under the film.
The film is laid on the glass, fitted to the edges of your windshield and squeegeed down by hand.
The film finishes bonding over the following days. At pickup we go over washing and care, including why ice scrapers and pressure washers stay off it.
The film absorbs impacts from gravel and road debris, so the mark lands in the film instead of the windshield.
